5 Trending Tech Startups Aiming to Prevent Food Waste Across the Globe

From cloud computing to solar powered fridges, these companies could be the next high impact waste reducing leaders and disruptive  innovators in food tech.   

1. Foodcloud - Dublin, Ireland

  • Through the Foodcloud app or website, participating business can describe their food surplus that hey would otherwise throw out. Nearby charities and other organizations in need of food receive messages if they could benefit from the surplus of food described. 

  • There are two types of donations: “First-come first-serve donations” which are done on an ad-hoc basis and more structured “allocated” donations from larger stores, where charities are allocated particular days to collect food.

  • Most of the food businesses registered with FoodCloud are supermarkets. There are a few cafes and bakeries registered also.

2. ColdHubs - Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.

  • Coldhubs "is a 'plug and play' modular, solar-powered walk-in cold room, for 24/7 off-grid storage and preservation of perishable foods. It adequately addresses the problem of post- harvest losses in fruits, vegetables and other perishable food."

3. California Safe Soil - West Sacramento, CA, USA

  • Fresh food recycler that creates a fertilizer using produce that is too spoiled to sell at supermarkets. 

  • Harvest to Harvest (H2H) fertilizer created returns the nutrients to the soil and promotes sustainable agriculture.

  • Produces liquid, organic, and garden fertilizer products
